From 21 to 23 October 2025, members of EMERGE Work Package 5 gathered at Neapolis University Pafos for a three-day workshop focusing on flexible lifelong learning and micro-credentials. The sessions brought together experts and practitioners from the nine EMERGE partner universities to share best practice and develop innovative approaches to adult education together.

The workshop opened with a welcome address from the Rector of Neapolis University Pafos, Professor Pantelis Sklias, who reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to fostering inclusion, innovation and lifelong learning across Europe. He emphasised the crucial role of universities in empowering individuals through education that adapts to evolving social and professional realities.

Throughout the sessions, participants explored how higher education institutions can design inclusive and flexible learning opportunities that respond to regional skills needs and reach learners who are traditionally excluded from formal education. The discussions addressed the potential of micro-credentials to support reskilling, upskilling and professional mobility within Europe’s evolving labour market.

The workshop concluded with an open session entitled “Beyond the Alliance: Micro-credentials – Best Practices from Around the World”, in which international experts presented global approaches to lifelong learning and modular education. Exchanging experiences emphasised the importance of co-creation, collaborating with regional stakeholders, and establishing shared standards for micro-credentials within the European Higher Education Area.
