Gateway to Opportunity – Where Talent Meets Real-World Practice
On 1 April 2025, Matej Bel University (UMB) in Banská Bystrica hosted the 12th edition of its University Career Fair, a flagship event dedicated to fostering student and graduate career development. Open to students, alumni, and the general public, the fair served as a vibrant platform where academia met industry, aligning closely with UMB’s commitment to employability and skills development within the EMERGE Alliance.
More than 30 esteemed companies and institutions participated, representing sectors such as IT, finance, education, marketing, manufacturing, and public administration. Employers presented current job openings, shared hiring expectations, and offered tailored advice based on their industry expertise.
The fair extended beyond traditional recruitment. Interactive workshops and expert-led discussions empowered participants to refine essential professional skills—including time management, communication, personal branding, and career planning. A standout feature was the experiential session titled “Who Am I and Where Am I Going?”, led by professionals from UMB’s Centre for Support and Continuing Education. This session encouraged attendees to identify personal strengths and align their career ambitions with practical pathways.
Visitors also had the chance to assess their language competencies through on-site proficiency tests and attend lectures on the critical role of language skills—such as English and German—in enhancing employability both locally and internationally.
While participation from students and the public fell short of expectations, the Career Fair still offered a meaningful experience to those who attended. From acquiring new knowledge and developing career strategies to forming valuable professional contacts, the event reinforced the importance of linking academic training with real-world opportunities.
This initiative also reflects UMB’s active participation in the EMERGE Alliance, which aims to build a more integrated, skills-oriented European Higher Education Area. Events like the Career Fair demonstrate how UMB is working collaboratively within EMERGE to bridge the gap between education and employment, foster regional and international mobility, and prepare students for meaningful contributions in a rapidly evolving job market.
